When Should I Book My Newborn Photographer in Lincolnshire?
If you're expecting a baby, there are probably approximately a million things on your mind right now.
Choosing a newborn photographer doesn't need to be another one of them.
One of the questions I hear most often is:
"When should I book my newborn photoshoot?"
The good news is that you don't need to know exactly when your baby will arrive before you book. In fact, nobody does!
If you're considering newborn photography in Lincolnshire, I recommend getting in touch during pregnancy so that we can reserve space around your due date.
That means when your little one arrives, your newborn session is already taken care of.
When should I book my newborn photographer?
Ideally, I'd recommend booking your newborn photographer during your pregnancy, usually from around the second trimester onwards.
You don't need to wait until you have a bump the size of a watermelon.
Booking earlier simply gives you the best chance of securing the date or availability you would like, particularly during busy periods of the year.
When you book with Willow Light Studio, we don't need to know your baby's exact birthday.
Instead, we work from your due date.
Once your baby arrives, we'll arrange your actual session date around their arrival.
So if you're due in February...
You might book your newborn session while you're pregnant in September, October or November.
Then, when your baby arrives in January or February, you simply get in touch and we'll arrange your session.
You don't need to predict the unpredictable.
When should newborn photos actually be taken?
There isn't one magical day when newborn photographs have to happen.
I generally recommend having your newborn session within the first couple of weeks, depending on your baby and the kind of photographs you're hoping for.
Some families love those very sleepy, curled-up newborn photographs, while others prefer their baby to be a little more awake and alert.
And babies, of course, haven't read the plan.
That's why my newborn sessions are baby-led rather than rushed or rigidly posed.
If your baby needs a feed, we stop.
If they need changing, we stop.
If they need a cuddle, we have a cuddle.
If they're wide awake and looking around at everything, we work with that too.
The goal isn't to make your baby fit the photoshoot.
The photoshoot fits around your baby.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
This is one of the reasons I don't ask you to choose a fixed newborn session date months in advance.
Babies have a wonderful habit of ignoring calendars.
If your baby arrives early, we'll bring your session forward where possible.
If they decide to stay cosy for a little longer, we'll adjust accordingly.
Once your baby arrives, just let me know and we'll work out a date that suits you and your little one.
What happens during a newborn photography session?
At Willow Light Studio, newborn sessions are relaxed and unhurried.
I'll photograph your baby on their own, but I'll also capture the relationships around them — because those photographs become incredibly precious as your baby grows.
Depending on your family, this might include:
your baby on their own
mum and baby
dad and baby
both parents with baby
siblings with their new baby
little details such as hands, feet and eyelashes
natural moments and cuddles
Family and siblings are very welcome, so your newborn photographs can tell the story of your whole family rather than just documenting your new arrival.
And if your older child isn't particularly interested in sitting still for photographs?
That's okay.
We'll work with them rather than expecting them to perform.
Some of my favourite family photographs come from the moments in between the "proper" photographs.
What should I bring to my newborn session?
Honestly?
Not much.
I want your experience to feel simple rather than like you're packing for a week away.
Willow Light Studio has a selection of neutral wraps, blankets and simple baby outfits, as well as a curated wardrobe for mums, so there are options available if you'd like to use them.
I'll also guide you through what to wear and what will photograph beautifully with the soft, neutral style of the studio.
If there's something particularly sentimental you'd love included, you're very welcome to bring it along too.
What if my baby doesn't sleep?
This is probably one of the biggest worries parents have.
Please don't worry.
Your baby does not need to sleep for the whole session.
Some babies sleep through almost everything.
Some want to know exactly what's going on.
Some need three feeds, two cuddles and a complete change of outfit before they're ready to settle.
They're all normal.
I won't expect you to keep your baby quiet or force them into a particular pose just because we've started taking photographs.
We'll take our time, follow their cues and capture the moments they're giving us.
Should I book newborn photography if I'm not sure yet?
If you're considering it, I'd recommend getting in touch.
You don't need to have every detail decided.
We can talk through what you're looking for, what you'd like your photographs to feel like and whether my style is right for your family.
My approach is intentionally soft, natural and timeless, with the focus on connection rather than elaborate props or heavily posed setups.

You don't need a perfectly sleepy baby.

And you definitely don't need to have everything figured out.
You just need to bring your baby, nappies and milk. I'll take care of the rest. 🤍
